Maria's Story

By Maria

Maria's journey into mental illness began with a traumatic incident: as a volunteer in the police service, she witnessed a murder outside her home. Despite her attempts to administer CPR, the victim succumbed to a brutal knife attack. Two weeks later, Maria experienced an acute psychotic episode, leading to her hospitalization. The hospital environment was challenging, with noise, chaos, and insufficient staffing, making recovery feel nearly impossible. However, during this time, Maria reached out to Mind's blue light line for emergency service workers, where she felt truly heard for the first time. Although she couldn't immediately utilize the resources offered, the act of listening made a significant difference. After her discharge, Maria stayed in a female-only crisis house, where she felt her trauma was acknowledged, and she began to feel safe again. She completed her degree with first-class honors, thanks to the support of her community mental health team. Maria's path to recovery was largely outside the NHS, involving medication and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Despite her hospital experiences, she found solace in charities, which played a crucial role in her healing process.
